‘Solo’ – a bunch of acoustic tunes that accumulated somehow, recorded by Bill Chambers in his garage/studio with Shane Nicholson and featuring Shano, Bill and Kasey Chambers, Chris Haigh, Mick Albeck, Kym Warner and James Gillard. KB’s first and only ’solo’ record…..you can see how many folks it takes to stand alone!
Solo Review: 4 1/2 stars
“Australia’s best songwriter swims freestyle out of The Flood with a superb 12-track acoustic-based album. Eleven are new compositions, so it’s probably wrong to begin with thetrack that’s a cover. But the sensibility of Silver Threads and Golden Needles, recorded by Wanda Jackson in 1956 and a big hit for The Springfields in 1962, is the silver thread that runs
through the album. Heartfelt, stripped back, Bennett sings it in a way I haven’t heard from him in 20 years and it makes me feel both young and old again. These are songs about real lives lived, relationships forged, broken or somewhere in between, emotions laid bare. The message we take from them is as simple or as complex as we want it to be. And if Shelter isn’t one of the best ballads written in years you cansmear my ears with jam and tie me to an ant hill. Shane Nicholson and Kasey Chambers provide texture where appropriate.”
